The Rail Runner hit a vehicle near San Felipe Pueblo on Sunday, leaving two people dead, according to New Mexico State Police.

Officer Dusty Francisco, a State Police spokesman, said police responded to a crash around 11:15 a.m. between a vehicle and the train on State Road 313 near milepost 15, close to the Pueblo.

“The New Mexico State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit is assisting with the crash investigation, which remains active and ongoing,” Francisco said in an email.

The names of the victims have not been released.

The Rio Metro Regional Transit District said service was stopped for the day due to the crash.

Augusta Meyers, a spokeswoman for the Rail Runner, said there were about 90 people on board when the southbound train crashed into a vehicle. None of the train’s passengers were injured, she said.

The Rail Runner sent another train so the onboard passengers could continue their commute.

Passengers in Santa Fe were provided southbound buses to return home after service was stopped for the day, Meyers said.

The train will resume normal operations on Monday.
